Consumers are increasingly aware of what they eat. In the supermarket, it has become quite normal to labels reading, checking E numbers and critical looking at ingredients, fats and proteins. Products are compared, and compositions that are deliberately chosen as better or healthyr be seen.

Remarkably, this critical eye often stops in cosmetics, while skin products are applied directly to the skin on a daily basis. The ingredient list - the INCI - receives little to no attention in this regard, even though it is just as transparent and informative as a nutrition label.

Reading INCI lists provides insight into what a product actually contains, in rather than relying on marketing claims, because those can sometimes be just a little be more beautiful than reality If a company is eager to sell products to you.

Especially with the current offerings on the market, we would like to help you obtain insight So that in the future you also more focused and aware can choose your makeup or skincare product. That may sound a bit serious for a cozy blog, but sometimes it's necessary because we care about you as our customer. Surely you want No PFAS or other junk in your makeup or skincare?

Creative Cosmetics, that sounds interesting but I don't understand any of those terms

We understand that. Fortunately, mineral makeup is all about simplicity and transparency. Instead of complex formulas with many synthetic additives, a product consists of a limited number of carefully chosen ingredients, each with a distinct function. This makes the product clear and understandable.

CI 77891; understandable? Well not for everyone yet and that's why we'd like to help you get started so you can control what you put on your face yourself. This applies not only to Creative Cosmetics products but also to any makeup or skin/care product.

But what do all those terms mean? Like INCI?

INCI stands for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. or; International naming of cosmetic ingredients.

This is a standardized, international naming convention for ingredients used in cosmetic products. Each ingredient has one official INCI name, so that anywhere in the world it is clear what is in a product, regardless of language or brand name.

    INCI characteristics:

    • Ingredients are usually in Latin or English displayed
    • The list is on the package or website under "Ingredients"
    • Order is based on quantity applied in the formula (from high to low)
    • Dyes are often referred to as CI numbers

    Purpose of INCI:

    • Transparency for consumers, everyone can read the ingredients.
    • Uniformity for legislation and control, mandatory on websites and labels.
    • International recognition of ingredients.

INCI example mineral foundation from Creative Cosmetics

A mineral foundation can consist of:

    • Mica
    • Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)
    • Zinc Oxide
    • Boron Nitride
    • Iron Oxides (CI 77491 = red), CI 77492 (= yellow), CI 77499 (=black)
    • Ultramarines (CI 77007= blue)

Together, these ingredients provide coverage, color and a natural finish. Mica gives a soft glow, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide contribute coverage and protection, and Iron oxides (iron oxides) provide the right tones. In this list, you'll also read Boron Nitride.

Why boron nitride makes a difference

Creative Cosmetics' foundation contains Boron nitride. This is a special ingredient within mineral makeup. Although it occurs naturally, it is produced synthetically for cosmetic use. This is done deliberately so that its quality, purity and structure are fully controlled. The result is a safe and consistent ingredient that performs optimally on the skin.

The added value is in its properties: boron nitride feels silky smooth, allows the foundation to glide effortlessly over the skin and gives a refined, even appearance. Thanks to its light-scattering action, fine lines and imperfections are optically softened. In addition, it improves adhesion, allowing the foundation to last longer. Compared with formulas without this ingredient, the finish looks smoother, softer and more natural.

    Clear? Almost....

Knowing the INCI of a product is essential to understanding what you are actually applying to your skin.

Cosmetic products are often presented with marketing terms such as "natural," "pure" or "skin-friendly," but these terms are not always strictly regulated, sometimes abused one uses these terms to sell better. The INCI list, on the other hand, is required by law and provides an objective and complete overview of the ingredients used.

    Key reasons:

    • Transparency: you see exactly what substances are in a product, without interpretation or marketing language.
    • Preventing skin reactions: with sensitive skin or allergies, you can recognize and avoid specific ingredients.
    • Making conscious choices: you can compare products based on composition rather than claims.
    • Understanding quality: the order of ingredients shows which substances are most abundant.
    • Recognition of substances: with knowledge of INCI, you can identify ingredients such as pigments, fillers or active ingredients.

Last but not least, you can also use the fabrics you not on your skin like:

      PFAS:
      (INCI; PTFE, Perfluorodecalin, Polyperfluoromethylispropyl)
      Parabens:
      (INCI; Methylparabens, Ethylparabens, Propylparabens, Butylparabens.
      Unrefined oils :
(INCI; Paraffinum Liquidum., Mineral Oil, Petrolatum, Cera Microcristallina.
      Micro Plastics:
(INCI; Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Nylon-12)

Because your skin the largest organ of the body and is in direct contact with these products, understanding their composition is a direct factor in control about what you are using. We hope that reading this blog has given you more insight and that you will also take a critical look at the label and the INCI of your favorite product just like you did with that bag chips in the supermarket does :)

    Love Team Creative.
